"The greatness of the world and its moral progress can be judged by
the way its animals are treated" (Gandhi).
A large number of animals around the world are constantly being
abused. Whether it is animal experimentation, research, or just "fun",
it is illegal in some places, and must be stopped. This problem has
not only created mayhem in the United States, but also in other
countries, including Britain. Some researchers say that what they do
to the animals is only minor, but activists caught the torturing of
the animals on tape, and some research facilities have been brought to
court. As you can see, animal abuse is a serious problem in the world
that needs to be changed. The definition of abuse is physically or
verbally misused, mistreated, or to hurt or injure.
Animal abuse puts a financial dent in both the government, and
individuals. Some top-notch experimentation labs can cost up to
$40,000,000 to build.
After realizing how much they just spent on the
building alone, the supervisors decided that the animal treatment
would have to be less than that of an average treatment. Though the
lab cost a fortune, activists are discovering some of its dirty little
secrets, which might cause it to be shut down. Also, the price of
abusing animals for individuals is very costly. Generally, around
$2,000, it can put a hole in someone's bank account. Although the cost
can be very high, it is justifiable for such a revolting crime.
There are many issues that opinionate the voice of the people. Some
people are against abuse, while some are with it. This is one of the
many causes why abuse is taken to a different, yet harsher level.

Nice read
I found this quite interesting to read and horrifies me to hear of the University of Oregon's experiment! :( I liked your opening quotation of Gandhi, it seems to be very effective for setting the feel of the following essay. Is there a reason there are differences with the line spacing? For example, more impact for the single line spaced paragraph?
