1.In the beginning of "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" by Hemingway is where Harry's personality will be examined. Harry first speaks and refers to death when he says, "the marvelous thing is that it's painless" he also asks as to whether it is the "sight" or the "stench" of his infected leg that has drawn the "filthy birds." It is noticeable that he is a bit of a realist (or a pessimistic) since his reply to Helen when she says that they might as well, "make it as easy as we can until the plane comes," is "or until the plan doesn't come." He makes another reference to his imminent death by saying, "I'm dying now. Ask those bastards," as he points towards the birds. It is also shown in the beginning that there is something in his life that he regrets, "So now it was all over, he thought.

So now he would never have a chance to finish it." Thus, the reader is left wondering what it is he will leave undone if he does die. This is answered later on when he thinks about he will "never write the things that he had saved to write until he knew enough to write them well." It is explained that writing was his potential passion since he kept in memory what it was that he wanted to write. It is obvious that Harry is resentful of his dependence on Helen's money when he refers to her money as being "bloody" and he tells her that he never loved her. His need to use her and her money show his character and that just as he gave up his potential to write he gave up his pride by allowing himself to depend on her.
