The $80,000 Life Experience

The days of finding a job that can support a family right out of high school are gone. In today's America, higher education is the key to success not only in the job market but also in life. More and more students have been enrolling in colleges to improve their futures even with the rapidly rising cost of tuition. The majority of these students attend school with the help of financial aid and student loans. However, most students do not fully understand what responsibilities they are taking on when they attend college with borrowed money. Their mistakes and lack of knowledge can lead to bankruptcy and defaulting on the loan. Since student loans have become a necessity in today's economy, more knowledge and understanding of their reality is needed for current college students and perspective college students to make well-informed choices when it comes to financing their higher education.

I realized how important a college education was as soon as I reached the glass ceiling of my nursing assistant job just six months in. After one particularly long shift I sat down at the kitchen table with my laptop and read everything that is on the internet about going back to school. What I found was that a lot of people were like me, confused and nervous about paying the ever rising tuition costs. Even for the students who have the help of their parents, paying for college can be difficult. Brianna Lee comments in her article "5 Things You Need To Know About Student Loan Debt" that "the average cost of tuition and fees for colleges across the country has grown by more than 400 percent between 1985 and 2005, with costs doubling over the last decade."
