The topic of abortion has been a controversial issue for several years. Many people believe that abortion should not be legal, that it is murder. Still others believe that abortion should be legal, stating that the mother should have the right to choose. The question is what do we, as a nation, do about it?Those who are totally against abortions (pro-lifers) believe that “Personhood begins at conception.” This belief is based on the fact that, upon conception, a unique DNA is formed, and God has created a new life. Because of this, a woman should be required by law to continue her pregnancy, except maybe in extreme circumstances (When does human personhood begin?). Pro-lifers believe that the embryo or fetus is a person and is entitled to basic human rights, including the right to live (Abortion Access). They also believe that there are other options, besides abortion. They say that the mother can give the baby up for adoption after it is born or that if the mother had used contraceptives, the pregnancy could have been avoided in the first place.

In contrast, those of us who are for abortions (pro-choicers) believe that there should be little, if any, interference with a woman’s decision to abort her unborn child. We believe that a human life becomes a person after the point of conception and that new life is not created until the baby is born (Abortion Access). It is for this reason that we do not want the government to interfere. The basic right to live, therefore, begins at birth.
