Account for the conditions that led to the development of the Greek Poleis during the Archaic period.!!! Throughout Ancient Greece there were many different conditions that led to the development of the Greek Poleis during the Archaic period however the three most significant conditions were the Geography, the structure and the Greek Foreign Policies. !! Firstly there were several different geographic factors that led to the development of Greek Poleis and in particular, their independence. Greece's landscape is extremely mountainous with more than 80% of Greece being mountainous terrain. This made travelling from one place to the other very difficult in Greece as the mountainous terrain made it very slow and hard travelling. This led to the isolation of all the Poleis as since it was so hard to travel from one place to the other the Poleis remained very isolated and changed and formed without the influence of the other city states. It also meant that a lot of the Poleis were built into the side of mountains not only because there weren't many other places to build a city but also because it was a natural defence. Since 80% of Greece is mountainous this meant there was not very much land for growing crops which meant that generally the population of Poleis lived close together in the 'urban' part of the city. The mountainous terrain also led to each Poleis having to use the sea as a form of trading and collecting enough food and equipment to live by. This also led to Poleis being built near the sea so they could easily build a fleet of ships for trading, fishing and protection. Since ever Poleis was isolated this meant that there was hardly any nationalism between the city states and each city state believed and fought...
