Brazilian religious beliefs are very diversified and amalgamated. Brazilians are well known for not being strongly bound to any religious affiliations, but since the days of colonialism there were few religion that made their mark and became a staple for the rich cultural and religious traditions that many generations to come would partake and uphold with a strong will and conviction.

All Portuguese settlers and Brazilians were forced into Catholicism and were bound by the doctrines of the faith. Not only were they bound to the Catholic Church, but they were forced to pay taxes to the institution of the church. After Brazil became an independent Republic, one of the first constitution written in 1824, introduced the right to religious freedom, but Catholicism was seen and upheld to be the official religion of the newly constituted republic.
