American civil war research

Bryan Adams Year10

The American civil war was the deadliest war in American history - killing nearly 620,000 soldiers and a mass amount of civilians. The War Between the States was fought between Southern slave states and the United States federal government. The American Civil War was waged for four years starting in 1861 to 1865; Starting in April 1861. Southern states formed a group called the Confederacy, which went against the beliefs of the Union. Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States and Abraham Lincoln had different views on slavery which led to this war as Lincoln believed that all slaves should be set free and he recommended the restoration of the Union.

Slavery had a significant impact on society in a moral and economical aspect. The money had 'strengthened the American economy in the north and south.' After slavery was abolished America became a more advanced industrial society.

This then caused the downfall of the Confederate States of America. Lincoln made it so that; slaves were known as contraband or illegal imports to represent the captured slaves. Lincoln took away the view of slaves as property and allowed the states to control the territory within their borders. The Union 'won' the war and (around) 558,000 Americans died to form what is now America, a 'free speech' country where all states are 'equal' and there is government in every state.
