I. The Classroom Physical Environment
1. Draw a map of the classroom. In your map include: clock, student desks, chairs, blackboards, computers, closets, shelves, learning centers, audio video equipment, bulletin boards, teacher's desk, plants, door, windows, animals, waste basket, pencil sharpener, tables, and other furniture and/or equipment,
2. What is posted on the walls? How are displays arranged? Are people shown in the displays? List the different cultures or ethnic groups that are included in the displays.
3. List the title and author of ten books that you see on the shelves.
4. Describe the view seen through the windows.
5. Describe the classroom in terms of lighting, acoustics, and temperature.
B. Interpretation- Relate to Observations
1. Is the room culturally inclusive or exclusive?
2. Is the room aesthetically pleasing? Why or why not?
3. Is the physical climate (temperature, lighting, acoustics) comfortable?
4. What words would you use to describe the impact of the classroom environment (formal, informal, relaxed, professional, etc.)?
5. Which specific philosophy/philosophies are reflected in the physical arrangements of the classroom? (Plato, Rousseau, Progressivism, Authoritarian, etc.)? In what ways?
II. The External Physical School Environment
1. Draw a map of the school grounds (lawns, play areas, parking lots, concrete schools yards, locked fences, etc).
2. Describe the architectural aspects of the building. Describe size, color, and shape; construction material; windows; and other architectural aspects; what is the floor plan like-- open, egg crate, other); the inclusion of any bars, locks, or other restrictive devices; age; and any unique aesthetic features.
3. Do you have to circle the building in order to find an open door? How many unlocked entrances are there to the school?
4. List repairs needed by the school.
