For this paper I have decided to select three pieces of art from chapter 20. The three pieces of art are from the Baroque era. My first choice is titled The Calling of St. Matthew and was created between 1599 and 1602 by Michelangelo Merisi Da. My second choice is by Rembrandt van Rijn called Resurrection of Christ, which was created between 1635 and 1639. The last artwork I chose is a Landscape with Flight into Egypt, which was finished in 1603 by Annibale Carracci.

Baroque Culture altered the image of the Czech countryside for many decades. The Catholic Church began to exert itself, by doing some things different to restore its’ position. Other religious beliefs were banished. They rebuilt quiet few of the older or damaged structures in the Baroque style. Emphasis was put on the spiritual relationship and unity.

Michelangelo Merisi Da is probably best known as Caravaggio, an Italian baroque painter.

His paintings represented saints and biblical forms as ordinary, plain people. Very little is actually known about his earlier life but you can assume from his art that he was a catholic with very good morals. From what I have gathered from reading, this was not the case at all- He gained his fame when he revealed the three life-size paintings describing Saint Matthew’s life in the 1600. During that time Michelangelo’s life was occupied with well-known violence. It was said a full manuscript of the trial pending against him and all of the police records would take up several pages. Some of the violent incidents almost ended with his life. Later, he was told to leave Rome after his alliances were killed during a violent incident.
