The Andromeda Strain is a science-fiction novel written by Michael Crichton. The novel takes place in the 1960's in the United States, primarily in the southwest region of the continent. The military is launching a series of satellites for a project called SCOOP. SCOOP was a program that planned to orbit seventeen satellites around Earth's orbit and collect microorganisms for study, mainly to find new elements in the atmosphere that can be used as a weapon in biological warfare. Scoop VII, the seventh satellite launched abruptly left stable orbit two days after launch and falls to earth. The satellite crashes in Piedmont, Arizona, a small desolate town with a population of forty-eight. Two government employees travel to Piedmont in order to recover the missing satellite. When the two men arrive they find corpses everywhere, and soon they themselves, die due to infection to the unknown bacteria brought back by the satellite.

The project immediately calls five of the best scientists to find out as much as they can on the virus. There were two survivors "ÃÂ an infant baby and an old man. The scientists use scientific method to find out as much as they can on the organism. Meanwhile, the strain spreads to the city of Los Angeles. The novel ends when the virus fortunately mutates to a harmless strand.
Technology played a major part in containing the strain. The organism is put in a "controlled situation"ÃÂ a special and expensive lab created solely for the Wildfire Project.
