Jones of Nayland stated that "Cruelty to dumb animals is one of the distinguishing vices of the lowest and basest of the people - wherever it is found, it is a certain mark of ignorance and meanness." Animal cruelty is has become a major issue over the years. It is a problem that has been ignored, but should be recognized because harmless animals have been harmed in many ways. There are a lot of things that people can do to help slow down this cruelty.

Animal cruelty is the crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal. The definition is often broken down into two categories. One category is called passive. Passive cruelty is cases of neglect, where the crime is a lack of action rather than the action itself. Severe animal neglect can cause unbelievable pain and suffering to an animal. Examples of passive or in other words neglect is starving an animal, dehydration, infestations of parasites, allowing a collar to grow into an animal's skin, not having the proper shelter for weather conditions, or even fail to seek veterinary care when an animal needs medical attention.

The second category is active cruelty. Active cruelty is when a person has intentionally caused harm to animal. This act could sometimes mean signs of psychological problems. These problems could be associated with sociopathic behavior and should be taken seriously. Example of active cruelty is an abusive person in a house hold killing or threating to kill the house hold pet to scare a family member into sexual abuse, and to remain silent about previous or current abuse. This is simply to psychologically torture the victims and to gain "power" in that home (Animal Cruelty).
