This paper will summarize two articles that relate to anorexia and discuss the causes, symptoms, effects and treatments of a perplexing eating disorder that many people suffer from. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that has bombarded western cultures and society as a whole. As a nurse we must acknowledge and encourage the importance of a healthy body image.

Introduction to Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that is linked to an unrealistic body image and an extreme dread of being overweight. Eating disorders are disturbing behavioral illnesses brought upon by a numerous factors. This paper will summarize two articles that have been published in Psychology Today and Maclean's magazine and will also discuss the causes, signs and symptoms, complications and treatment of the eating disorder.

Summary of Articles Related to Anorexia

The first article entitled "Never Too Skinny" (Appendix A) and portrays how factors such as strict homes, competitiveness, sports, genes and rigid beauty standards play a role in anorexia nervosa. Sarah was a professional ballerina and weighed 95 pounds at 5'3". Sarah stated "Nothing could prevent me from controlling my body" (Seagall,2001,p.1). After years of suffering she finally acquired help after injuring herself because her body wasn't capable of healing itself. Her sister is also recovering from anorexia. This article links the relationship of perfectionism and eating disorders.
