few contrast. The contrasts that we do find are somewhat unexpected because they are so great. In this essay, I will demonstrate and describe the comparisons and the contrasts of the two Kurtz, Marlow and Captain Willard, the atmosphere created and how the issue of racism is dealt in both stories. With these four important elements presented in the essay, you can see that one story was inspired by the other, therefor that is why there are so many similar points in both stories.

It is obvious that Kurtz in "Apocalypse Now" is very much the same as Kurtz in "Heart of Darkness". They have the same ideals, the same objectives, the same attitude and the same respect from the people who surround them. For both of these guys, their ideal life is that every that comes in contact with them, become completely infatuated with them.

That every one how meets them, takes them as gods. Their objective is to overrule every body and become the ultimate God. The have the same attitude: there are better that every body and every one should be worthy of them. What they want from every body is what they get. They have a way a brainwashing the people and making them believe what ever Kurt(s) want tem to believe. Nobody ever makes a bad remark of Kurtz(s) because the have the up most respect for them and because the people know the power that Kurtz(s) have over the people. The only contrast that I found about the two Kurtz is that they have a different way of dying which changes the whole plot of the story. In Apocalypse Now, Kurtz gets killed by captain Willard and in heart of Darkness, Kurtz dies of illness and bad health.

We find the same comparison with Captain Willard and Marlow. They have the same respect from the people who surround them, they both become obsessed with Kurtz, they are both determined to find what they are looking for and they both have a link with Kurtz death in both stories. In apocalypse Now, Willard kills Kurtz and in Heart of Darkness, Marlow is with Kurtz when he dies. They both have the same character in the stories but the only difference is their mission. Willard is hired to kill Kurtz and Marlow is hired to find Kurtz.

One element of both story that was the same is the atmosphere created. In the two stories, we find a dark, hot atmosphere that was well describe and shown in the stories. The atmosphere created in both stories is the same. We find the same dark, creepy, death, sad and smoky environment all through the plot. The only difference is that in apocalypse Now, it is more evident because we get to see it. Unlike in the book, it is so well describe that we get a good enough picture to see the similar effects created: "They were not enemies they were not criminals they were nothing earthly now,-- nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom." One small part of "Heart of Darkness" that I noticed was the racism. Unlike "Apocalypse Now", there is a big contrast in the way that they exposed the black people in the stories. In Heart of Darkness, the black people are blamed for every mistake. They are miss treated and hated by everybody. Unlike in Apocalypse Now, the black people are given the same opportunities as the white men. The are upraised and seen as heroes for the work they do in the war.

In the two stories, the plot, the characters and the atmosphere are very much the same. They have all the same characteristiques, only a few differences. If we had to analyse all the major comparisons and contrasts, it would be overwhelming. The two stories were both interesting but too much alike for my choice.
