Asian influx in New Zealand

In the last few years, the Asian population has grown across New Zealand since the first Chinese farmers and miners set foot on New Zealand shores. Just take a walk down any main road in Browns Bay and some of the thousands of Asians staying in New Zealand, can be seen. The first question that comes up in my mind is did it happen over a long period or over the past four years? Another question I fear to ask is why then are New Zealanders so negative towards the Asian immigrants in general? I also took the opportunity to ask a 12-year-old New Zealander what he thinks about Asians.

First of all from 1991 - 2001 the Asian population in Auckland jumped from 52,584 people to 151,909 people. In just ten years, the Asian population in Auckland has increased by 188.3%. I got a little bit worried with these statistics.

But I wasn't satisfied with my results I had gathered, so I did some surveys of what people thought about the increase in Asian population, whether they were worried or Just didn't care. Seventy six percent of the people I surveyed were getting worried with the situation, the other 24% did not care. This implicated that most New Zealanders are aware and are getting a little worried of what New Zealand might look like if the Asian population kept increasing. I also did another survey asking the question 'How Many Asians should New Zealand have?' Answers were- None = 39%, A few = 61%, More Asians than Kiwis = 0%. This showed that most of the people I interviewed did not mind a smaller group Asians here, and did not feel they were a big threat.
