Robert Oppenheimer invented the Atomic bomb the Hydrogen bomb and helped discover atoms, protons and electrons. The first bomb he designed was the atomic bomb

A test atomic bomb was fired in a desert in Mexico. The explosion was equal to 1,800 tons of dynamite, enough to destroy an entire city. The atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima destroyed 70,000 buildings, 90% of all the structures in Hiroshima. During the first fifteen seconds after the bomb dropped the temperature rose to 3,000 degrees F and melted everything within a half mile of where the bomb dropped. 100,000 people were killed instantly and another 100,000 within the next five years.

Later on physicists began to understand the atom and alpha particles. After the discovery the Hydrogen bomb was built. The H- bomb was equal to 10 million tons of TNT or more! Luckily the H- bomb has never been used except for tests.

The first test bomb was nick named Mike. The scientists only expected the Mike to create a blast of 1 to 2 megatons or 100 times more powerful than the blast at Hiroshima. Instead it yielded 10.4 megatons that is 500 times as strong as the explosion at Hiroshima!

Robert Oppenheimer did many things when he made the bombs, one of which was to teach the world how terrible war is.
