Every step that has been taken in the past leaves a footprint in the future. After World War 2, in 1946, Canada witnessed a jump in its gross birth rate; from 20.1/1000 people, to 28.5/1000, by 1959. Aspects such as improved health care, increase in marriage at earlier ages, and a more suitable economy where parents can have and raise more children, are just some of the main key-contributing factors that helped shape this phenomena known as the Baby-Boom . The Baby-Boom literally describes the post WWII period in which many of the participating countries' demography began seeing an all time high in birth rate.
Canada's baby-boom lasted almost two decades; from 1946-1965. From there, the population influx began slowing down as couples began having children later in their marriage years, as more women entered the labour force, and priorities, hence forth, changed. Nevertheless, the boomers remain a prominent generation till today, making up 25% of Canada's population (2). Canada's sudden population surplus brought on many demands to accommodate the 'Boomer' generation. As the Boomers grew, so did the society around them. Today, the Boomers in Canada continue to become a part of the large group of senior citizens, as they surpass the age of 64, and enter retirement. This age group in itself requires society to shift around them, as a prominent age group come with many necessities. The Baby-Boomers continue to have an impact on Canada's trends, economy, demography, industries, and society as a whole, till today.
