Salvador Dalí, eigenlijk Salvador Felipe y Jacinto Dalí y Domenech, werd op 11 mei 1904 geboren in Figueras bij Gerona (Catalonië). Hij was een Spaans schilder, tekenaar, etser, filmer en fotograaf en ontwierp eveneens juwelen, meubels, decors en kostuums voor ballet en film. Bovendien schreef Dalí filmscenario's, romans en vooral polemische essays. Al zeer vroeg onthulde zich bij hem een buitengewoon tekentalent en hij kreeg zijn eerste tekenlessen in 1916. In de eerste schilderijen die hij maakte, verwerkte hij zowel invloeden van het impressionisme als van de Spaanse schilderkunst van de 19de eeuw, vanaf 1920 gebruikte hij ook het Italiaanse futurisme. In oktober 1921 werd hij toegelaten op de kunstacademie San Fernando in Madrid. Hij raakte er bevriend met de dichter Frederico García Lorca en de regisseur Luis Buñuel. Reeds tijdens zijn studietijd in Madrid was hij door zijn excentriek gedrag een zeer opvallend figuur, iets wat hij, ongetwijfeld om publiciteitsredenen, zijn hele leven heeft volgehouden.
In 1926 werd Dalí wegens onbehoorlijk gedrag en opruiing van de studenten ontslagen op de kunstacademie. Vervolgens ging hij naar Parijs. Hier ontmoette hij Pablo Picasso, Eluard, Tanguy, Miro en André Breton, de leider van de surrealistische beweging. Door bemiddeling van de Spaanse schilder Joan Miro werd Salvador Dalí einde 1929 officieel opgenomen in de kring der Parijse surrealisten. Zijn vermoedelijk eerste schilderij ('Bloed is zoeter dan honing') dateert uit 1928. Ongeveer in dezelfde tijd maakte hij met Louis Buñuel de twee surrealistische films 'Een Andalusische hond' (1929) en 'Het gouden tijdperk' (1931), waarvan de premières in Parijs een enorm schandaal veroorzaakten.
