Pollution in Curacao

Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes adverse change. It can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. It has been found to be present widely in the environment. Curacao is a tropical island in the Caribbean with a beautiful climate. Our island has a lot of advantages for tourists like sun and coral reefs. Unfortunately, there is also an oil-refinery that emits tons of toxic compounds that are inhaled by the people living in the neighborhood of this refinery. Thousands of people suffer several severe health complaints. Due to the trade wind, the people in these neighborhoods inhale these toxic compounds every day and every night of the year, and have been doing this for their whole life. Children rights are under pressure, and violated, because the children simply do not have a clean environment in which they can live and go to school.

There are schools that are evacuated many times a year, leaving thousands of children without a proper place for education. The inventory of health complaints about Isla has had rather remarkable results. Health complaints appear to be limited to a considerable extent to acute health effects from irregular situations.

In the past years several efforts have been made to improve the environmental situation related to the refinery of Curaçao at Isla. The plans for the power plant follow a 'built, own and operate construction' (BOO). The plant is formally named 'Curaçao Utility Company', but is more generally known as BOO. BOO/CUC is in the preparation phase. The decision phase has been completed, plans, design, specifications and contractor.
