Caritas Australia

History:

The name of the organisation I have chosen to research, is Caritas Australia. Caritas was created over 110 years ago, in Germany, Lorenz Worthmann founded the first Caritas. The organisation, named after a Latin word meaning love and compassion, grew to become one of the largest aid and development agencies in the world. In the 20th Century, Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI, laid the foundations for an international network, and in 1954 Caritas was officially recognised as a organisation. In 1964 Caritas began in Australia, it came over to Australia as the Catholic Overseas Relief Committee, the focus of this organisation was to distribute funds the Catholic Church had received for overseas relief from the United Nations, 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign.

In October 1995, after consulting key supporters, the ACR National Committee recommended a name change. The ACBC Bishops agreed and on 1 July 1996, the agency became known as Caritas Australia.A non-government, not-for-profit organisation working in over 30 countries around the world, Caritas Australia is part of Caritas International, which comprises a network of 165 Catholic relief aid, development and social service organisations in over 200 countries and territories.

Caritas' Aims

Caritas Australia aims to help people around the world, Caritas wants to be able to help them help themselves, by providing them with the basic human needs to achieve it. Caritas aims to become the recognised leader in the international aid and development area. Caritas wants to create more mobile agencies around the world, able to respond to the needs of the poor as the world changes., they want to deliver justice to the countries that don't have rights, Caritas wants to create effective programs to be able to lead to the independence of the...
