Grade Level: 2 Subject: Life cycle of a caterpillar Objectives: Standard 4, living 3&4 1-Students will be able to identify the four stages of a caterpillar?s life cycle in order.

2-Students will be able to construct a diagram of the life cycle of a caterpillar out of pasta.

Procedure: I will start by asking the class what happens to a caterpillar as it grows. We will talk about what the students think happen and then read the book, The Caterpillar Story, to find out if what the class thinks is correct. Once I have read the story to the class as a whole we will talk about the stages and look at the four different stages, individually using printouts on the Elmo in the classroom. We will then put them in order on the board together for reference throughout the activity. While showing my example, I will explain to the class how to fold their construction paper and label the stages.

After the stages are labeled the class will draw arrows that show the correct order of the stages that a caterpillar goes through. After placing the students into groups of 3 or 4 I will hand out the materials to each group. Once the activity is finished I will hand out a ditto to each student that has fun facts about caterpillars and butterflies. The class will read them and discuss them together. To close the lesson I will put a poem on the overhead and read it out loud to the class. The class as a whole will read a poem about the life cycle of a caterpillar to reinforce what they have just learned. While I am reading the poem to the class they can point to the appropriate stage on their project.
