This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona

"Victor's mother was as poor as he was, and the rest of the family didn't have any use at all for him."

(Sherman 11) The author (Sherman Alexie) describes Victor as being very poor and un-liked by those around him. Victor was living on a reservation and had no money, nor did others around him that he knew. Having a lot of friends was not considered to be one of Victor's strengths. When describing the character and putting these two descriptors together a picture of Victors self esteem, presence and respect from the tribal community can be seen. It this the viewpoint from the author or one which he wants to create for you?
