Chemistry Definitions

Matter: matter never changes wherever you are

Mass: the amount of matter that occupies something, changes with different gravitational pull.

Physical change: A change that can be reversed, no new substance is created. The product may change shape but won't change state.

Chemical Change: A brand new product is formed e.g. gas bubbles, endothermic / exothermic reactions, colour change, and state change, etc...

Volume: The amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional object as measured in cubic units.

Reactant & Product: Na (reactant) + Cl (Reactant) = NaCl (product)

Corrosion Reaction: A reaction in which metal and oxygen join; the metal is eaten away.

Combustion Reaction: A reaction (chemical) requiring oxygen & producing heat (sometimes light)

Law of conversation of mass: matter is neither created nor destroyed.

Atoms / Molecules (elements / Compounds): atoms are the things that make up a molecule and a molecule is a thing made up of atoms.

Metals are atoms that act a certain way, they also when written as a molecule go first next to and then the non-metals are written, most of the periodical table is made up of non-metals.

Combining capacity: how many atoms can a molecule take until it is chemically stable.

Sublimation: the change of a solid straight to a gas.

Evaporation: the change of water to a gas.

Condensation: the Change of gas to a liquid.

Qualitative properties: has to do with describing something with words

Quantitative Properties: has to do with describing with numbers.

Exothermic Reaction: A reaction that gives off energy (rust, Hydrogen bombs)

Endothermic Reaction: Take in energy (Plants)

Reaction Rate: How long it takes for a solution to react; it also has to do with temperatures.

Concentration: the purer the product is. HCl, dilute is not concentrated.

Density: the mass of a substance...
