A Child Called "It"

A Child Called "It", written by David Pelzer, was first published in 1993. Though this story is short, it does not lack the qualities a well-written story contains. In this shocking story, a malevolent mother finds excitement in torturing her own son; mainly due to alcohol. One child's courage to survive his mothers truculent acts is a compelling resource for internal motivation.

David must become extremely independent as he fights for his well-being throughout his adolescence. He learns to adapt to his mother's harsh punishments although it was very difficult to undergo. His mother brainwashed him into believing he was a terrible being; that his presence was unwanted and he was an "it". She shows this hatred toward him throughout the story. David did not want much. Only simple things that a healthily brought up child needs. David wanted to be accepted, to contain respect from others.

This ounce of respect that David yearned so badly for made me, as the reader, melt inside. The majority of people have freedom and respect - we live normal lives and often think nothing of it. Some take for granted what comes so feasibly. This poor child felt nothing of a normal life.

The other people whom surrounded David such as his father or his brothers were his family but did not treat him as such. He looked up to his father for encouragement, but when his father irresponsibly betrayed his family, the only thing David turned to in his life was hate. He referred to his mother as "the bitch" and made sure no matter how much pain she put him threw, he would not let her know it affected him. David not only hated his mother, he hated everything.
