Americans love chocolate and popcorn. According to statistics provided in a report written by Encyclopedia Popcornica, "Americans consume 17 billion quarts of popped popcorn annually or 54 quarts per man, woman and child. Although world-wide sales of popcorn are steadily increasing, American consume more popcorn than the citizens of any other country" (1). The report also reported that it is one of the most wholesome and economical foods available today. In another market research report by Mercury News, it is indicated that "As a nation, we eat more popcorn than any other country in the world- about 60 quarts per person a year. Similarly, chocolate consumption by Americans is also very high in the United States. In an article, Chocolates, the authors write that "the United States leads the pack in chocolate patenting" (Lin & Hwa 1). They further indicate that even though Switzerland leads in per capita chocolate consumption, the United States does 13 billion dollars annually in retail chocolate industry while the Swiss chocolate industry is worth about 809 million dollars.

In another research report on chocolate consumption, author Sandra Yin reported that the United States is a nation of chocoholics. She reports that "Americans consume over 3.1 billion pounds of chocolate each year" (1). These market research statistics indicates that popcorn and chocolate is big business in the United States! Considering the high levels of consumption of both popcorn and chocolate, this research paper describes a marketing plan for the ultimate popcorn experience - chocolate covered popcorn. This food product will be marketed on behalf of two well known power house companies which produce popcorn and chocolate world wide.
