CLOSTRIDIUM PERFRINGENS Page 1 The date was November the twenty-third. We were called for clean up service. Our group, Emergency Response Team was called in to the case because their was an outbreak occurring in many nursing homes in Ocala. Many were falling ill and many people eating in Surrey Place came down with food poisoning. We were responsible for containing the disease and finding out who was behind this bioterrorism attack on Ocala's nursing homes. Since the bioterrorism attack took place, a lot of people have been taking out their relatives from nursing homes. Many relatives of the residents think food is unsafe and the nursing homes business will be effected economically.

As we investigated the scene and talked to the people who contracted this disease, we found out that the agent responsible for this and other incidents were happening in Marion County retirement homes such as Life Care, Timber Ridge, Palm Garden, and the Bridge.

Clostridium Perfringens is other wise known as Clostridium Welchii. Every year ten thousand cases go reported to Centers of Disease Control. Many of these cases go unreported.

The bacteria is grown where there is no air. It is a gram positive spore former.

Page 2 The spores are created to protect it from adverse conditions. The bacteria is variable in size. Dormant cells are resistant to heat and toxic chemicals or detergents. Type A can enter through body wounds, creating gas gangrene. It is mostly found in many different meats. Foods can be contaminated with Clostridium Perfringens that have been in contact with the soil. Vegetables can contain the bacterium since the bacterium comes in contact with the soil.
