Cohabitating before Marriage

Today there are many couples living together before marriage. Sometimes these kinds of relationships end up with success and sometimes they are unsuccessful. There are many advantages and disadvantages in living together before marriage. The advantages of living together before marriage is to get to know your partner, learn about one's abilities if he/she can satisfy your expectations, and more. Yet on the other hand, the disadvantages of living together before marriage are the following: one's religious standards and family values, parenting problems and more. I believe there are more advantages than disadvantages in living together before marriage, because sometimes disadvantages in this kind of relationship are avoidable.

Dating someone serious over a certain period of time often leaves desires for more. Physical intimacy becomes more intense and one of the partners may be wondering if they really want a serious long-term commitment. While Marriage is still the desire of many, there are plenty of fears regarding the legally binding institution.

[With the divorce rate of this country rating higher now than the last forty years], of all marriages as failures, people are more reluctant to make that step (Anderson, 2003). Many variables can affect whether or not a marriage is successful, including length of marriage. It is found that the longer a couple is married, the higher their risk of divorce becomes. In comparing divorce rates of couples not living together first and those that lived together first, only the time frame while they are legally married is considered. Findings have also shown that those people that chose to cohabitate exhibit characteristics found in couples that have a higher risk of divorce.
