Honoring Christopher Columbus
In this article, the author tells us how Christopher Columbus discovered water routes that would eventually lead to the colonization of North America, which many refer to as the Columbian Exchange, where both American and European lives were changed. The author says, "And of all discoverers Christopher Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds." He wanted to find his way to riches, so in the 15th and 16th centuries, Columbus would try to find new routes across the sea Far East to India, Japan, China, and the Spice Islands. Although he did not know the existence of America, he thought that going west would help find the east quicker. Columbus was the only one determined to set off directly across a broad, unknown sea with no specific knowledge of what lay there to be seen for him.

The Nina and the Pinta were caravels, small ships with triangular sails. The Santa Maria, was a nao, was a larger, square-rigged ship. Between these three ships, they carried about ninety men. Columbus had soon discovered the world to be much bigger than what he had first calculated, and this had caused many of the men to complain. Because of this, Columbus said, "I also told the men that it was useless to complain, for I had started out to find the Indies and would continue until I had accomplished that mission with the help of Our Lord."
