Compare the story "the speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with "Lamb to the slaughter" By Roald Dahl.

Written in the 19th century detective stories usually have detectives in. They also have suspects, and victims and sometimes you have sidekicks who are not as clever as the main detective.

In Conan Doyle's story there are some long and difficult words such as 'merely', 'commonplace', and 'retorted'. The first sentence has 77 words in it, the words in the Roald Dahl are not old-Fashioned words but are 20th century words that young people can understand and which they use daily. The first sentence in "Lamb to the Slaughter" only has 23 words in.

In Dahl's story a frozen lamb leg was used by the policeman's wife to hit the husband over the head with. In the end the police ate the evidence.

Sherlock Holmes is clever and a superb solver of clues but his sidekick Dr. Watson is not as good as Sherlock Holmes.

The detectives in "Lamb to the Slaughter" are not anywhere near as clever because they never checked all the clues.
