In this experiment I am going to find out how concentration of acid affects the rate of reaction with magnesium ribbon.
Equation for this reaction:
Mg + 2HCl --> MgCl2 + H2
In this experiment I think the higher the concentration of hydrochloric acid the faster the reaction.
The highest concentration reacts faster as the solution is more concentrated which means that there will be more particles in the solution which means that there will be more collisions and therefore more successful collisions and therefore the rate of reaction will increase. If the concentration is doubled, the number of particles in any space will be doubled, so there will be double the number of collisions, and so double the number of successful collisions and therefore the rate of reaction will be doubled.
In this experiment I'm going to use 5cm3 of magnesium ribbon. Also I'm going to use 50cm3 of solution (acid and water)
To make this experiment a fair test I must ensure a few things:
* The only variable in this test is the concentration
* Measuring the substances accurately, and using the same equipment to do so.
* Not changing the volumes of the chemicals
* making sure I clean the flask everytime after each test
* size of magnesium ribbon must be the same
If I keep these things the same, my experiment should be accurate, but if these things are varied my results will be affected.
To keep my experiment safe I will follow the following rules.
* Remove everything in my way
* And stand up when doing the experiment
* Wear goggles when dealing with the chemicals so they don't go near your eyes.
