Values, virtues, and morals are instilled into children. These children will develop respect for one another and a reason to live life. A goal will be set as something to be attained, something to live for and something to honor. People have viewed honor, in different ways and it has changed over the years. Honor has been portrayed in the epic, Beowulf and in the movie, A Few Good Men. Even though honor has changed in many different ways it will always be seen through a person with faith, character and dedication.
A person with honor must have a great deal of faith. Faith is believing in something when common sense tells you not to. Beowulf had faith in himself. ?They have seen my strength for themselves,/Have watched me rise from the darkness of war,/Dripping with my enemies? blood.? (lines 51-53). He truly believed that he could defeat Grendel.
Hrothgar?s kingdom also had faith in that he was going to rid the kingdom of evil forever. In the movie, A Few Good Men, Lance Cprl. Harold W.
Dawson and Pfc. Louden Downey showed faith. They had faith in the system. Dawson and Downey believed in the ?chain of command,? and had faith that it would protect them in the case. In Beowulf and in A Few Good Men there was loyalty shown. This loyalty had both negative and positive results. The Anglo Saxons showed their loyalty and faith in each other through comitatus. Dawson and Downey were so loyal to the system that they compromised their values to honor the ?chain of command.? People must truly have faith in something before they can honor it. An honorable person must also have faith in themselves and their values. Having faith in your values is having moral strength.
