Critical Thinking and Decision Making

Critical thinking is a vital tool in everyday life. Everyday individuals are challenged with situations which require them to make decisions be it personal or business related. Many factors are related to making sound decisions. The environment in which an individual is raised greatly impacts the manner in which a decision is made. This paper will also state the importance and benefits of critical thinking and decision making .

Defining Critical Thinking

Critical thinking can be defined in many ways. Critical thinking is the decision making process which involves analyzing and evaluating evidence and arguments. An individual who can decrease the effects of biases, feelings and assumptions as well as clearly infer deductive and inductive reasoning is one who is a well trained critical thinker.

Critical Thinking. Net defines critical thinking as "reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do. Under this interpretation, critical thinking is related not only to the formation and checking of beliefs, but also to deciding upon and evaluating actions. It involves creative activities such as formulating hypotheses, plans, and counterexamples; planning experiments; and seeing alternatives"(Ennis). Critical thinking includes complex characteristics such as rationally, self-awareness, open mindedness, honesty, and judgment. When an individual makes a rational decision, the decision is based on reasoning, not feelings or emotions and evidence is a requirement. A critical thinker is aware of the importance of incorporating the eight standards of critical thinking which are clarity, precision, accuracy, relevance, consistency, logical correctness, completeness, and fairness.
