What is a crucible? A crucible is a time in history when political or cultural changes take an effect, changing a society into a different shape than what it began as. Throughout the play there is a battle between truth and deception that is set in the Protestant town of Salem, Massachusetts. In Salem at this time young women were accusing their elders of witchcraft just to get out of a whipping. Many people were dying because they would not lie and condemn their soul to an eternity with the devil

Crucible is commonly associated with a piece of metal that has been heated and reshaped to its maker's desire. The witchcraft trails were being caused by simple white lies of children that are being taken to the limits to secure their place in society. Abigail Williams and her friend are caught by her uncle dancing naked in the forest and conjuring spirits , but instead of admitting to her sins when Rev.

Parris makes the simple statement " .....If you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know, for surely my enemies will and they will ruin me with it." (Miller 10) she lies and tells him that she was not conjuring but she were just dancing and she threatens her fellow sinners with this comment "'I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you . . .. I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!" (Miller 20) this shows that she is willing to protect her lie even if it mean breaking one of the ten commandments that her society embraces as their law and way of life.
