Cuba is located in the West Indies and is largest of the four islands: Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. It is located 90 miles off of the Southern most tip of Florida and is about 780 miles long and about 60 in width (on average). The capital of Cuba is Havana located on the northwest coast, 92 nautical miles from Key West, Fla. Over half of Cuba is made up of fertile flatlands, low hills, and valleys where cattle are grazed and sugarcane, tobacco and coffee are grown. Cuba's perimeter had 2,335 miles of coast with over 280 beaches.
Cuba's population is an estimated 11,117,000 and was 72 percent urban and 28 percent rural in 1990. Most people speak Spanish to communicate and Spanish are the majority. Spanish make up 66% of Cuba which makes sense because Cuba was ruled by Spain in 1898. Mexicans make up 22% of the population, and 12% are African.

Ever since John F. Kennedy signed an embargo with most United States trade with Cuba in 1962, they have had to rely mostly on the Soviet Union for their trading. Cuba signed a 700 million-dollar trade agreement with the Soviet Union because the Cuban economy was in ruin. Food was getting very scarce, raw materials were at a minimum, and crops weren't producing nearly enough food for the people. The Soviets started shipping goods into the Cuban ports. So ever since that embargo Cuba mostly only import from Russia, but they export all of their valuable products.
