Kudler Fine Foods
Current Ethical Issues Paper
Kudler Fine Foods is a specialty food store in the metropolitan area of San Diego, California that offers a variety of fine food items in three large scale stores. Kudler Fine Foods opened on June 18, 1998 by owner Kathy Kudler. Kathy Kudler came up with the idea of her fine food stores on a shopping trip to get items to make some gourmet food in order to relieve some stress. Kathy wanted to share her love and experience of gourmet cooking with others and there came the idea of Kudler Fine Foods. Kudler Fine Foods offers a wide selection on bakery and pastry products, fresh produce, fresh meat and seafood, condiments and packaged foods, cheese and specialty dairy products, and finally a wide variety of both domestic and imported wines. Along side with selling fine wines, Kudler Fine Foods has a wine steward available at each store to offer help to customers, and finally they offer monthly wine appreciation classes to customers wanting to learn the nuances of wine.
Kathy feels that it is her duty to offer the finest and freshest foods to her customers. Kathy is the sole buyer for the stores which means she is not often in contact with her customers. This could become an ethical issue because she is wanting to make her customers happy, but she is not actually in contact with them to see what it is that they want or to hear the things they are unhappy about. Kudler Fine Foods is creating a frequent shopper program so this may be helpful in finding out what people are buying and not buying. In the strategic plan for 2003 there is concerns about company weakness and threats that could lead to issues within the company.
