Death "Comrades, you're in the concentration camp of Auschwitz. There's a long road of suffering ahead of you. But don't lose courage. You've already escaped the gravest danger: selection." This quote is from the book Night, by Elie Wiesel. This book is based on the life of a young teenager trying to survive in a concentration camp during World War II. It was very hard to survive in a death camp. That is what Auschwitz was. Auschwitz exterminated over one million Jewish people and other political prisoners.

The first main point that I want you to understand is the use of concentration camps. Concentration camps made people work. "Here, you have got to work. If not, you will go straight to the furnace. To the crematory. Work or the crematory-the choice is in your hands." If you didn't work or couldn't work then you were killed. Another use of the concentration camp was to work the prisoners so much that they would die.

"But as he ran he began to undo his buttons, crying: "I can't go on any longer. My stomach's bursting..."" The Germans worked them so hard that as they ran, they would fall from loss of energy. The SS officers would then shoot the Jews as they fell. The last use of a concentration camp was for separation. "An SS noncommissioned officer came to meet us, a truncheon in hand. He gave the order: "Men to the left! Women to the right!"" I think that they separated them so that they would not know if their spouse was dead or alive.
