The funeral is not just an ordinary funeral it is painted in the reader's mind as a funeral fit for royalty. A funeral that would shock everyone, consequently he asks "...traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.." In this grand funeral, there are "aeroplanes, circle moaning overhead- Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead- Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves."Auden creates the image that without love everything else is worthless; life not worth living.
