With the formulation and artistic aspects of marketing lends to there being several definitions. When I think of marketing I tend to think of both simultaneously. Marketing is a combination of knowing the target market for the product/service and what type of artistic aspect would work best in respect to that market. A few different ways of defining marketing are "the act or process of selling or purchasing in a market," "an aggregate of functions involved in moving goods from producer to consumer," "the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service (Merriam-Webster, 2008)," and "marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders (Kerin, pp 24)."Each of the above definitions has a slightly different take on the topic of marketing and how it may affect organizational success, but the fact remains simply that; marketing has an effect on an organization's success.

The first way marketing makes an effect is by the research that goes into the marketing plan for a project. Even though research can be conducted in many ways, the goal is to know who, where, why, and how to sell the product. The who focuses on whom the target customer is going to be. The where tells which stores and placement should be used to maximize sales. The why informs how to advertise to the customer the need for the product (important to who the customer is as well). The how is the sum of all the previous information. The final marketing plan encompasses all the research and now moves on to the artistic aspect.
