Defining Marketing

When speaking of marketing, what is truly meant? Is marketing advertising that leads to increased sales, or is marketing an organizational activity? The meaning of marketing can be different things to different people, thus marketing can be defined in many ways depending on the source. Is marketing important to organizational success? The answer to that can vary as well, depending on their view of marketing. How an organization uses marketing can determine whether it will be a success or not.

Marketing Definitions

Personal Definition

Marketing is the process of attracting consumers by the producers, whether to purchase products from the organization or to increase the services used. The goal of marketing is to attract consumers and increase sales or services, thus increasing the organizational profit.

Merriam-Webster Definition

According to Merriam-Webster (2009), marketing is defined as "the act or process of selling or purchasing in a market, and the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service" (para.

1).

American Marketing Association Definition

According to American Marketing Association (2009), "Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large" (para. 2).

Comparisons

Depending on whom is asked and where marketing is defined, the definition of marketing will be different, but the definitions have something in common; a transaction of products or services from producers to consumers.

Importance of Marketing in Organizational Success

Is marketing important to organizational success? The answer to that can vary as well, depending on their view of marketing. Depending on how an organization uses marketing can determine whether it will be a success or not.
