Depression in one form or another affects more than 19 million Americans each year, more than 1 in 5 Americans can expect to get some form of depression in their lifetime, almost two thirds of all depression cases go untreated, 15% of those diagnosed with depression commit suicide, almost 80% of those who experience depression can feel better with treatment and clinical depression commonly co-occurs with other medical illnesses. These statistics are all dramatic and they are all about depression. The follow will discuss what depression is, causes of depression, symptoms of depression, different types of depression and also how you can treat depression. I'll start off with the question "What is depression"; the official text book definition of depression is "An emotional state in which there are extreme feelings of sadness, dejection, lack of worth, and emptiness". Some alternative names for depression are "sadness; mood changes; gloom; blues; dejected; discouragement". In simpler terms depression is am emotional sate of feeling down or sad for prolonged periods of time. There are many different unique and different causes of stress; different causes of stress vary with age, race or a person's personality.
Depression describes feelings of sadness, emptiness, and grief which most people experience at some point in their lives. There are hundreds of treatments. The severity, type, and treatment are as different as each individual. Clinical depression is a form of mental illness which unlike normal sadness or grief, is of longer duration and significantly impairs the individual's ability to lead a normal life. Reactive depression occurs following a traumatic life event, such as job loss, divorce, or death of a loved one. I have always thought, a person cannot be sufficiently treated for depression with medication alone. He/She must have the support of loved ones, friends and family as well.
