Perception, the process in which ones brain organizes sensations into meaningful patterns, in other words, how individuals see the world around them. For many hundreds, if not thousands of years however, people have experimented and found many different ways to alter or distort ones perception. Hypnosis, sensory deprivation, alcohol, various drugs, and even the use of different plants are all some of the different ways to distort perception. Though some ways of distorting perception do have a useful purpose and are not as harmful as one may think, others are used merely for self gratification and can become deadly if not used under the care of a trained physician. Let’s take a look at different ways some of the above are used and whether or not they are or can be harmful.

Looking at hypnosis as a way to distort one perception, most automatically think about stories they have heard regarding someone being on a stage hypnotizing a group of people and having them believe they are something they’re not, this is purely a recreational, or entertainment form of hypnosis that is harmless to anyone with very few participants actually even being hypnotized.

Hypnosis does however have its benefits when administered by a trained professional, it can be used to help people relax, take away moderate pain, and can also help with progress in certain therapy issues. On the other hand, roughly only forty percent of people tend to make good hypnotic subjects while under a doctor’s care, thus leaving hypnosis for the most part in the hands of entertainment and not as useful as one could hope for.
