Through the years, there have been many studies conducted on diversity and its demographic impact on individual behaviors. Margaret Mead once wrote, "If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place" (ht tp://www.wisdomquotes.com/cat_diversity.html). There are many understandings of what diversity means but in the business world, it most likely can be defined as all the ways in which different individuals and their characteristics get along in a company. The demographics of diversity are very real and are major influences on individuals and the companies for which they work. Therefore, this paper will discuss the diversity characteristics of Ethnicity; Socioeconomic Status, Gender and Personality Traits on individual behavior.

Ethnicity

America has always been called a great "melting pot" of the world but this idea is only true in one sense; that this phrase only held true for the European immigrant experience, not those from Africa, Asia, or anywhere else.

Currently, as in the past, people of European decent or Caucasians have maintained the "majority" position of population in the United States. However; there have been estimates made which have stated that by the year 2020, the "minorities" of today's United States population which are described as blacks, Asians, Hispanics etc... will be the majority population of tomorrow. Pepi Seppal wrote, "America can no longer afford to "ignore the demographic trends in the society; we hire society into our workplace . . . we are society" (ht tp://collegenews.com/thewallstreetjournalonline).
