In Noel J. Kent's article "The New Campus Racism: What's Going On?" he states that there is a lot more racism than there ever was on these college campuses. The percentage has increased since the 1980s. He states that one of the reasons why this happens is because a campus can mirror the attitudes of our society as a whole. Another answer that he states is that the economy has a lot to do with the racism in the US. Kent starts his article by talking about the history behind racism in the US. The civil rights movement in the 1960s stated that there would be opportunity for all, but it never was complete. There were still the segregated neighborhoods and poverty among the minorities. Kent says that the young teenagers, who enter college already, have an opinion as to what they think of others. The rich whites from the suburbs have this image from their peers, the media and other sources that blacks are these violent, nasty people.

Yes, some of them might be but not all blacks are violent and nasty. When the minorities do start colleges they like grouping together and the whites don't understand why they do it. The whites think that it's affirmation of the racial memberships. While, on the other hand, the minorities see that this grouping bothers the whites, its affirmation to them that the minorities must join together to fight the racism that they have to face. The economy is working against the minorities because of the fact that they don't get good paying jobs and because they feel that they cannot make a good living just because of their race or ethnicity.
