“Domestic violence causes far more pain than the visible marks of bruises and scars. It is devastating to be abused by someone that you love and think loves you in return” (Feinstein). Domestic violence is an act of violence or abuse against anyone living in your house or a member of your immediate family. Our society as a whole is much too tolerant of domestic violence, and action must be taken. Many people are tolerant of domestic violence because they are un informed I will address many peoples unanswered questions, such as where it started and who started it, what allowed it to continue and remain, and also what is being done to help stop the problem.

The terrible problem known today as domestic violence started all the way back in years B.C. when, “wife beating is accepted and condoned under The Laws of Chastisement. Under these laws, the husband has absolute rights to physically discipline his wife” (Safe Network).

These laws were created by Romulus of Rome. It has continued on through the middle ages and is still going strong now in the 21st century. The regions where domestic violence was first observed and recorded were Rome, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. A lot of the reason why domestic violence started is because ancient laws allowed and actually recommended brutality towards family members to get them to conform to what you are saying or want. A lot of abuse towards women and children began because of patriarchy or “A social system in which the father is the head of the family and men have authority over women and children” (Dictionary.com).
