I could feel every muscle twitch in anticipation, my heart quickened in preparation, blood rushed to every part of my body. But I continued to feign normalcy.? Two hours later Anjali1 crept out of bed and tiptoed across the stained broken glass and splinters of putrid wood. She was determined to get out. After 3 buses, 2 coffees, and a train ride across town, Anjali relaxed for the first time in three years. She did not look behind her shoulder. At last, she was free.

Anjali is one of countless victims of a male dominated society, where wife beating, mental torture and physical mutilation are spoken in silent whispers. Where the blows of abuse are ignored and cries of help are muted.

Where the impact of verbal afflictions and pressures play no role. Why does society blatantly ignore marital abuse? Why is there a blindfold when it comes to physical abuse of women; why when any physical torture is a blasphemy, domestic violence is overlooked.

Defining domestic violence simply as physical abuse, is a half-truth. Domestic violence encompasses emotional abuse; name calling, mind games, a feeling of worthlessness and helplessness, of subjection and incapacity. It is physical abuse and violence; slapping, punching, control over a woman?s reproductive choices, rape as well as denying the right to call for help. It involves economic abuse where there is control over a woman?s finances, not allowing her to work or even go to school. Then why should we keep silent when it is against the law to hit or abuse another person, when we have acts such as the Violence against...
