The Dominican Republic is located between Cuba and Puerto Rico. The dominican republic shares an island with Haiti. Columbus landed on the island in 1492, and the earliest Spanish colonies in the Americas were established there. It became independent in 1844.

LAND AND PEOPLE A number of islands surround the Dominican republic, among them Beata and Saona, witch belong to the Dominican Republic. The vegatation of the Dominican Republic, like the other islands of the west Indies, is extremly varied and plentiful. The highest and the lowest points in the whole Caribbean area are in the Dominican Republic. The highest is Duarte Peak, with a height of 10,414 ft; the lowest is found at Lake Enriquillo, only 53 miles to the southwest.

In the north, across to the Atlantic, is a fertile agricultural region, them Cibao Valley, drained by the North Yaque River. Santo Domingo, the capital, largest city, and largest port, is on the southern coast. The tropical climate is ameliorated at the higher altitudes and by the northeastern trade winds. Rainfall averages from 30 inches along the Haitian border in the southwest to 100 in in the northeast.

The Dominican population is very mixed. Haitians are the largest minority group. The population is 95% Roman Catholic. Primary education is free and compulsory for children 7 to 14 years old. The country has 8 universities, they also have the oldest university of the americas witch is the University of Santo Domingo.

CLIMATE The Dominicana Republic has a semitropical climate, Tempered by the prevaling eaterly winds.
