Military personnel have the most important job to our way of life. We deal with multi- billion dollar equipment on a daily basis. We have the lives of our comrades in our hands and we are charged to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. There is absolutely no room for illegal drugs in the military. At any given time we can find ourselves charged with making a decision that will affect the lives of many people and we cannot afford to have our decisions affected by any mind-altering substance. This is why drug testing in the military is very important.

DoD labs test 60,000 urine samples each month. All active duty members must undergo a urinalysis at least once per year. Members of the Guard and Reserves must be tested at least once every two years. DoD labs are equipped to test for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, opiates (including morphine and heroin), barbiturates and PCP.

Every sample at the minimum gets tested for marijuana, cocaine and amphetamines, including ecstasy, with some laboratories testing for every drug listed.

Service Members using the utilitarian form of ethics would probably feel that arbitrarily testing soldiers was a direct violation of a soldier’s right to privacy, but we as soldiers give up a lot of rights for the greater good of our country. On the other hand, individuals that subscribe to the deontological form of ethics would argue that the protection of our way of life and the safety of our comrades outweighs the rights of any who oppose drug testing. This belief is more prevalent in the military because we deal with potentially dangerous equipment that could result in the massive loss of life of military personnel and civilian alike.
