Effects of Cognitive Therapy versus Group Therapy on Complicated Grief

Abstract

Male and female participants (N = 40) were recruited from North Carolina State University to investigate the effect of cognitive therapy versus the effect of group therapy upon grief. Participants were separated via gender into 2 separate groups and then each group was randomly divided into 2 equal groups. Group 1 received the treatment of cognitive therapy. Group 2 received the treatment of group therapy. Participants at the end of treatment rated the level of grief on a grief scale. Group 1 males had a mean grief score of 1.9 (SD =.875). Group 1 females had a mean grief score of 2.3 (SD =.948). Group 2 males had a mean grief score of 7.8 (SD = .788). Group 2 females had a mean grief score of 8.9

(SD = .875). There was no interaction between therapy type and gender F (1, 36) = 10604, p > .05. Cognitive therapy was significantly better at redu1cing grief than group therapy F (1, 36) = 511.364, p < .05. Males had lower significance grief scores than females to therapy F (1, 36) = 7.364, p < .05
