Islam and Christianity: Life After Death?
Life after death is an important part of every faith. The question of whether there is life after death is raised in every religion. The two religions, whose beliefs I will be studying are Islam and Christianity. In this coursework, I will be studying about what Islam and Christianity believe about life after death and in the evaluation, I will try to find out the differences and similarities between these two major world religions.
The aspect of life after death has been mentioned in the holy Quran many times and the holy prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) has also talked about it on many occasions. From the teachings of our holy Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h), it becomes clear that after the demise of a person we apparently take him/ her to be lifeless, but that person remains alive, although his/ her life is different from our lives.
This is supported, by the following hadith, where the holy prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said," The act of breaking a bone of the dead body causes the deceased as much pain as is felt by a living person"(Sahih Muslim- Hadith Book).
Akirah means life after death, Sahih Muslims believes we will have a life after death and that it is eternal, never ending. Barzakh is significant as it is the period between death and judgement. Yawm al Qiyamah is the day of judgement where the deeds on this earth will be accounted for. Jannah is the place of eternal bliss known as paradise or heaven. The complete opposite place to heaven is known as Jahannam known as the place of eternal suffering for sins and bad deeds.
