When alcohol abuse becomes a problem for teenagers that is when the problem has gone too far. The possibility of even more children in high school with habits of alcohol use and abuse is absolutely unacceptable. Even more children dying from alcohol related car crashes, homicides and alcohol poisoning is outrageous. Children becoming heavy drinkers and later alcoholics cannot be allowed. For safety reasons and the welfare of all teenagers, the legal drinking age should not be lowered to 18 from 21.

Some people, mostly 18 year olds, say that they should legally be able to drink. They feel that if they are adults and are legally responsible for themselves then they should be able to legally purchase and consume alcohol. They feel that they are dependable enough to use alcohol responsibly and safely, but common sense and statistics prove otherwise. Obviously a lower age requirement would make access to alcohol much easier.

With abundant access to alcohol, teens will be able to consume more alcohol more frequently. The U.S Department of Health and Human Services already estimates that about 3 million teens in America are "out and out" alcoholics. Also the fact that some people are 18 when they are in high school means some high school students will legally be able to purchase alcohol rather than going through the complicated process of finding a way around the law. This will undoubtedly lead to the distribution of alcohol among friends who are below the age of 18. One result of this would be an increase in alcohol related car accidents among teens. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, from the year 1977 to 2000 the 16-19 age group had the most alcohol related automobile accidents excluding the years 1982,1983 and 1986, and in these years...
