Trying to make a decision on whom to give the family quilt to, the mother has to take in consideration who deserved them the most, and who is going to put it to better use. Magie has an emptiness inside of her that needs to be filled. Dee, the older daughter, is into herself and her life and doesn't need material things.

Magie is a quiet and shy person. She looks up to her sister but not like most younger sisters usually do with their siblings. She on the other hand is jealous; Anything her older sister had that she doesn't makes her feel lower and lower. The mother said "Maggie will be nervous until her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs, eyeing her sister with a mixture of envy and awe."(948). This proves that Maggie if terrified of her sister and also embarrassed by the fact that her sister is "perfect".

The scars on her face aren't just physical scars but they are scars on her life and personality that scar her forever.

Dee is very different from Magie. Dee is an extremely conceded person .

She has no family values at all. She is known as the popular one in the crowd that seems to want all of the attention. If Dee were to receive the Quilts, she would of just put them on the wall and forgotten about them. Dee really never wanted the quilts; she just wants to have her way. Dee getting everything she wants is important because the more things she gets the less that Magie has, and this is how Magie is who she is.

The mother of the two girls seems to be in an unstable state.
